John Lewis & Partners, a UK store, released a Christmas television ad with the theme “More than just a gift”. The ad shows how a gift can change the course of a person’s life. John Lewis chose a worthy star for the ad— iconic British singer Elton John.
A striking and nostalgic video directed by Seb Edwards— the ad takes the audience down the memory lane of Elton John. He is seen, as portrayed by different actors, playing the piano at different phases of his life, sporting his iconic costumes and memorable moves. It is a journey from John playing the introduction of “Your Song”, and transitions in to a stage showing him as an 80 superstar, rocking concerts in the ‘70s, performing at bars, recording in a studio, playing the piano for the family, hitting the keys at a school concert as a boy and finally, as a young child receiving his grandmother’s piano as a Christmas gift. Hence the title of the ad, “The Boy and the Piano”
Craig Inglis, Partner and Customer Director, John Lewis & Partners, says in a statement: “Think back to all of the Christmases that you have enjoyed over the years–I’m sure there is one very special gift that stands out above all others. That’s the magical feeling we wanted to bring to life this year. The ad tells the story of why Elton’s piano was more than just a gift and we hope to remind customers of that special moment when they’ve given a gift at Christmas time that they know will be treasured forever.”
Elton John is elated to be part of the advertisement. In a statement, the singer says: “The John Lewis Christmas campaign has so many warm memories for me and my family. It’s been a lovely opportunity for me to reflect on my life in music and the incredible journey I have been on, and how first playing my Grandmother’s piano marks the moment when music came into my life. The ad is absolutely fantastic and I’ve truly loved every minute of being a part of it.”
