Asian Three-Fold Mirror 2016: Reflections

The Asian Three-Fold Mirror project brings together three talented directors from Japan and other Asian countries to co-create a series of omnibus films with a common theme. The first of the omnibus series represents work by acclaimed directors Isao Yukisada (Japan), Brillante Ma Mendoza (Philippines) and Sotho Kulikar (Cambodia), and highlights the theme “Living in Asia,” with three episodes that depict the lives of characters who journey between Japan and Cambodia, the Philippines and Malaysia. The project framework requires the directors to include a character that is connected in some manner to another Asian country, and to shoot on location in an Asian country. The rest is left to each director’s unique style, as they weave the project’s main theme into their work.

Collaboration with the Japan Foundation Asia Center

In 2014, TIFF and the Japan Foundation Asia Center jointly launched an Asia-focused film culture exchange initiative that will run until the year 2020, when the Tokyo Olympics and the Paralympics are to be held. This endeavor aims to deepen mutual understanding within Asia, by showcasing Asian films in Japan, Japanese films in Asia, and by bringing Asian talent to the world through TIFF. With the festival serving as a communication hub for the Asian film industry, the aim is to build a future-oriented network in the region and to further cultural exchanges. Entering its third year, the project will present the world premiere of Asian Three-Fold Mirror 2016: Reflections, and will also feature Indonesian films in the 29th TIFF’s CROSSCUT ASIA showcase.
