MANILA, PHILIPPINES – The digital revolution continues to reshape our reading habits, as a recent survey reveals a growing preference for online newspapers and blogs over traditional formats like printed newspapers and books.
According to the survey by award-winning PR firm Comm&Sense Inc., online blogs (31%) and online newspapers (24%) have emerged as the top choices among readers, surpassing traditional books (22%) and printed newspapers (17%).

This study is part of the firm’s generational research titled “Common Ground: Pinoy Voices in New Media,” which surveyed 400 Filipinos aged 27 to 58 nationwide, exploring their media-based activities and media platform preferences. Conducted in line with Comm&Sense’s 20th-anniversary celebration in October 2025, this research marks two decades of the firm’s commitment to pioneering data-driven storytelling and PR excellence.
The Digital Shift: Convenience, Interactivity, and Sustainability
Dr. Fernando Paragas, a professor at the University of the Philippines Diliman’s College of Mass Communication and the study’s lead researcher, highlights the transformative impact of digital platforms on reading habits.
He notes that the convenience, interactivity, and sustainability of online formats are driving this shift, particularly among modern readers who are constantly on the move.
“The rise of online newspapers and blogs is a direct response to the demands of today’s readers for real-time, accessible, and engaging content. The ability to access news anytime, anywhere, combined with the rich multimedia experiences these platforms offer, has fundamentally changed the reading landscape,” said Paragas.
Diverse Voices and Community Engagement
Comm&Sense Managing Director Charlotte F. Reyes highlights the transformative power of user-generated content on these platforms.
“The beauty of online platforms lies in their ability to democratize content creation, allowing a wide array of voices to be heard through user-generated content. This diversity enriches the reading experience, offering readers a spectrum of viewpoints that traditional media often cannot match,” said Reyes.
Reyes also pointed out that the seamless navigation and interactive features of digital platforms enhance the reading experience, turning it into a communal activity where sharing, commenting, and engaging with content fosters a deeper connection among readers.
A Balanced Perspective
While the shift towards digital reading is comprehensible, traditional formats like printed newspapers and books continue to hold a special place for many readers. The tactile experience, nostalgia, and the ability to focus without digital distractions make these formats appealing to those who favor a more traditional reading experience.
This shift towards digital reading reflects not just a preference for convenience, but also a desire for a more interactive and socially connected reading experience. As readers navigate between digital and traditional formats, individual preferences and the context in which information is consumed will continue to shape the evolving landscape of reading habits.
