Adobo Main Course: Meet Brillante Mendoza

Despite making Philippine cinema history in France, Brillante Mendoza, was not even sure he could screen the movie for the Filipino public.  The movie “Kinatay” (Slaughtered) won for Best Direction, scoring a coup for Mendoza as the first Filipino to win a major award at the Cannes Film Festival.  Overnight, he was transformed from a relative unknown to front-page news.  An obscure figure to many outside of advertising and production prior to the award, Mendoza suddenly had congratulatory tarps all over the Municipal Hall of his hometown Mandaluyong.

adobo main course brings you a special screening of “Kinatay” on Tuesday, August 25, 7PM at Cinema 2, Greenbelt 3 (and no longer at the CCP, as previously reported).   Director Mendoza, as well as Sound Director Mike Idioma and Musical Director Teresa Barrozo will  be present for an exclusive Q&A after the screening.

As a special treat DVDs of Mendoza’s earlier films will be available for purchase: “Manoro, The Aeta Teacher”, “Kaleldo” (Summer Heat), “Masahista” (The Masseur) and “Tirador” (Slingshot).

Obedient to his own stringent rules, Mendoza refuses to cut or censor the controversial gore of the movie.  However, the “R” rating granted by the MTRCB, allows public screening restricted to adults.  Of the film, pop culture writer and critic Jessica Zafra writes, “Mendoza is part of a new class of Philippine filmmakers creating downbeat depictions of the impoverished Philippine underclass.” (http://www.newsweek.com/id/201750)

Catch “Kinatay” at the adobo main course and find out if the movie will indeed make a killing, pun intended, at the box office.
