MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Acclaimed Designer Budji Layug of the BUDJI+ROYAL Architecture+Design launched his very first book BUDJI: Design Journey” at the Grand Ballroom of Shangri-la, The Fort. The beautifully crafted coffee table book as Budji describes it is, “300 pages of photographs, words and designs”. Published by BUDJI+ROYAL Architecture+Design, BUDJI: Design Journey” tells the tales of Budji’s creative journey — from his furniture designs, paintings, and interior spaces.

Antonio “Budji” Layug is a Filipino designer and artist, known for his pioneering and holistic approach to design, and his fluid, seamless integration of spaces, as well as his perennial exploration and use of natural and indigenous materials. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Philippines gave the very first Haligi ng Dangal Award for Design to Budji for his work on the Lumot Lakehouse. He and his business partner Architect Royal Pineda through BUDJI+ROYAL Architecture+Design have gone on to design interiors, buildings, and now components of the New Clark City. Despite this, Budji has remained a proud Filipino who has mined the natural resources, heritage and culture of his country to create his contribution to the global feast of today’s arts and design.

The coffee table book, which took four years to make and is cut into six chapters that represent a different design style tackles Budji’s experiences as a designer and as a Filipino. The cover of the book — which stands out whilst having minimal color — is a portion of a staircase, free-flowing, and symbolizing Budji’s journey. Throughout the book three important philosophies of the designer is exercised: 1) Know your client, 2) Respect the place, and 3) Bring your own sensibility. Budji wanted to further emphasize that he is neither just a furniture designer nor an interior designer, and his expressions are without boundaries.

“Together through design, we can uplift the lives of the Filipinos and dream for a better future for the country,” states Budji in his speech. With the help of Caritas Manila, for every six books bought proceeds will go to sending a child to school.

During the book launch, BUDJI+ROYAL shared two of their upcoming projects: Athletics Stadium and Aquatics Center for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, and Bangkota – the Philippine Pavilion for Dubai Expo 2020.
