SM North EDSA marks its 25th year with tribute to pioneer tenants

PHILIPPINES, AUGUST 16, 2010 – SM, the Philippines’ largest chain of shopping malls, celebrated the 25th year of its first mall, SM North EDSA with a tribute to its first batch of tenants. Ricky Reyes, Bench, McDonald’s, Jollibee, National Bookstore, Goldilocks–now well-known brands all over the country–were among the mall’s first tenants.

To thank them, SM featured the brands in a supplement that ran in broadsheets yesterday, saluting them for taking a chance during the uncertain political climate of 1985 and staying with SM as it opened branches nationwide.

SM North EDSA, inaugurated in 1985, has grown from a floor area of 120,000 square meters to its current floor area of 425,000 square meters, with the additions of the car park and annex buildings in the late 1980s and The Block, Skygarden and Interior Zone in the last few years. It is now one of the largest shopping malls in the world.

With foot traffic of 350,000 a day, increasing to 500,000 during sale periods and holidays, SM North EDSA remains one of SM’s most popular malls in Metro Manila, alongside its other major shopping complexes SM Megamall and SM Mall of Asia.
