MANILA – TBWA\SMP digital ECD Joey Tiempo and Publicis JimenezBasic ECD Brandie Tan are set to judge at the 2015 Cannes Lions for the Outdoor and Radio categories respectively.
“The most difficult part of judging Outdoor in Cannes is you’d rather be outdoor in Cannes. Fortunately, my favorite work has always been in this category – from the solar-powered billboard that provided food for children to the mind-blowing Sound of Honda, which is practically a time machine,” Tiempo said of judging Outdoor. “To see how much the ideas have evolved in a medium where everything is possible is a definite draw for me, and that should keep me indoors.”
Tiempo is no stranger to awards shows, having been part on the jury for AdFest, New York Festivals, and Spikes Asia, where she has also won awards. The winner of the Philippines’ first Webby, Tiempo’s work has also been recognized at awards shows such as D&AD, One Show, AWARD Award, Clio, and the London International Awards.
She also finds time for life-changing projects such as the award-winning non-profit organization, Manikako, which aims to teach creativity and environmental responsibility to children. She is also the co-creator (and virtual band manager) of the country’s first doll rock band, Mistula.
Meanwhile, Brandie Tan shared that it is his first time to go to Cannes Lions.
“I’ve been to Cannes before but, it was for another festival.” Tan, who was part of the team which produced the Lotus Spa radio ad which won The Philippine’s first ever Gold Lion, shared “Even if I’m art based I write radio as well. A few have said it, ‘Radio is a visual medium’.”
“The Philippines is a country where radio is still a very effective medium. It’s been my goal to be able to produce the first ever most socially shared radio campaign. I don’t mind if someone beats me to it. As long as it happens. It just makes sense.”
In evaluating entries, Tan is looking for “Work that is being talked about. Either it’s being shared on social media or by news and media organisations. More importantly, the work needs to become a household word or part of popular culture.”
Tan is himself a recipient of over 200 advertising awards, with campaigns like ‘It’s More Fun in the Philippines’ and Bayan DSL’s ‘Lola Techie’.
He started his career at BBDO Guerrero Ortega back in 2000 having come from The Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He also became an instructor at the University’s Advertising Program. He was Creative Director at JWT Manila and ECD at Lowe Vietnam, BBDO Guerrero and Lowe Malaysia.
After 15 years of moving countries Tan is back home and is now leading the Creative Department of Publicis JimenezBasic, a role he took on early last year.
