It rained outside, but it also rained medals inside on the Cannes Lions’ first awards night. As was widely predicted, the evening was dominated by a category-busting promotion that has become an advertising landmark. “Best Job in the World” created by CumminsNitro Brisbane for Tourism Queensland won two Grand Prix for both Direct and PR. The campaign also won 2 Gold Lions and 2 PR Lions, for a total of six Lions so far. (And that’s even without Titanium/Integrated, where it is a likely frontrunner).

With a government client (the city of Yubari) distinguished only by a massive debt and the lowest divorce rate in the country, the promotion used the whimsical slogan “No money but love” to lead an effort that generated massive publicity and media attention for the cash-strapped city.
Several of the night’s winners crossed categories to win multiple Lions. “Village Where Nothing Ever Happens,” a promotion for pay TV by Madrid’s Shackleton Advertising, won a total of 7 Lions (2 Gold Direct Lions, 2 Silvers each in Direct and Promo, 1 Bronze in Promo). “The Store That Sells Hope”, for the Portuguese Red Cross by Leo Burnett Lisboa, won 6 Lions in Promo, PR and Direct, including 1 Gold Promo Lion. “Magic Salad Plate”, for Four’n Twenty Meat Pies by Clemenger BBDO Melbourne won 2 Gold Promo Lions, and 1 Bronze Direct Lion; “Fruit Burst”, for Pascall Fruit Sweets by DDB New Zealand, also 2 Gold Lions and 1 Bronze Direct Lion. Shackleton was also awarded the Direct Agency of the Year.
