From swatches to pixels to butterflies to tile mosaic

Our cover for this design issue is a first for adobo magazine. It features a front and back cover art designed by TBWA\Santiago Mangada Puno’s creative team led by John Ed de Vera and Nolan Fabular, “The pressure was on us, this being adobo’s design issue, we wanted something that catches your eye but is more than just eye-candy. It’s got to stand for something design-wise.”

Their top-of-mind was color swatches as these are an integral part of the design but the were afraid that it might turn out to be too obvious and literal. And then they thought of butterflies because they felt the patterns on the insect’s wings are inspired and inspiring.

Their creative mind then wandered into using blurred pixels because they feared that using color swatches might render their art to boxy, Nolan shared, “And then we thought that creating the pixelated artwork in the computer will be too easy. So we challenged ourselves and decided to create the design by hand using Teflon paint, it’s like painting tile mosaic.”

So there you go, it’s not sleight of hand but really, it’s magic.
