MANILA, PHILIPPINES — In a testament to the growing popularity of esports in the Philippines, adobo Magazine organized its first inaugural esports cup for the local advertising industry, engaging viewers from 26 different countries in an online tournament held throughout August 2020.11

This year, adobo Magazine traded its annual football tournament for an online Mobile Legends tournament in light of current quarantine restrictions against mass gatherings during the pandemic. For four weeks, 16 leading advertising firms in the Philippines battled it out for the prize pool of Php 150,000 in the adobo Esports Mythical Bowl.

According to Angel Guerrero, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of adobo Magazine, the response to this year’s inaugural esports tournament has been very positive. While the publication originally considered having an esports tournament about a year ago, it was timely and fitting that the event pushed through this year.

The esports cup, which garnered over 30,100 engagements on Facebook, was also watched by viewers from 26 countries.

Ace Saatchi & Saatchi’s Starlighters emerged victorious against Dentsu Jayme Syfu’s Team DJS in the Grand Finals, taking home the championship and grand prize of Php 125,000, in addition to also taking the award for Team of the Tournament. The Starlighters’ aggressive performance throughout, both as a team and as individual players, paved the way for their golden finish.

“With the team’s individual traits and abilites, we were confident that we can climb from bottom to the top. Through constant practice, we were able to complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses—eventually securing the the championship and giving you that roller-coaster-more-than-30-minute games you’ve come to see,” said the Starlighters in a statement.

“Winning the Mythical Bowl proves that, indeed, Nothing Is Impossible with One Team, One Dream! See you all in season 2!”
