QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES – The Ateneo Art Gallery’s recent show curated by Angel Velasco Shaw, Not Visual Noise, is further exploring the idea of telling stories through different practices of photography and what they mean today in a media-saturated world. This time, they’re moving the conversation into a panel discussion to be attended by photographers who contributed some of their works into the exhibit, including Ezra Acayan, Nana Buxani, Neil Daza, Raffy Lerma, and Veejay Villafranca, to be moderated by renowned artist and the curator herself, Angel Velasco Shaw.

The Ateneo Art Gallery is pleased to present its newest exhibition, NOT VISUAL NOISE, curated by Angel Velasco Shaw. The exhibition will run from 26 November 2019 to 29 March 2020 at the Fredesvinda Almeda Consunji Gallery, Ambeth R Ocampo Gallery, Elizabeth Gokongwei Gallery, and Alicia P Lorenzo Gallery located at the third floor of the Ateneo Art Gallery.
Curated by artist, writer, cultural organizer, and educator, Angel Velasco Shaw, NOT VISUAL NOISE is a seminal photography exhibition featuring over 30 artists living in the Philippines and in the Filipino diaspora. It showcases various artists engaged in photography-based art practices whose works broadly represent what is happening in the fields of photography today — from photojournalism, long-form documentary photography to conceptual and installation photography, and web/social media-based projects. With the various forms photography takes today, the exhibition further examines the tension between high/low culture and high/low art photography in a media-saturated world.
Velasco Shaw notes, “these artists are documentarians—of their interests, aesthetic and social concerns, and of the times in which they live—merging their past and present which perhaps inform their future artistic journeys using the multidimensional medium of photography. The works in this survey exhibition exemplify the diverse range of photography-based approaches and perspectives exploring cultural and socio-political issues today.”
Featured artists include National Artist Benedicto “Bencab” Cabrera, Ezra Acayan, Alex Baluyut, Ringo Bunoan, Nana Buxani, Geloy Concepcion, Geric Cruz, Kiri Dalena, Lizza May David, Neil Daza, Kawayan de Guia, Kidlat de Guia, Romina Diaz, Carlo Gabuco, Tommy Hafalla, Nap Jamir, Raffy Lerma, Marta Lovina, At Maculangan, Wawi Navarroza, Neal Oshima, Gina Osterloh, Butch Perez, Rick Rocamora, Emmanuel Santos, Lawrence Sumulong, Stephanie Syjuco, Wig Tysmans, Veejay Villafranca, Boy Yñiguez, and MM Yu.
NOT VISUAL NOISE will run from 26 November 2019 to 29 March 2020 at the third floor galleries of Ateneo Art Gallery, Soledad V Pangilinan Arts Wing, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University. ABOUT THE CURATOR
Angel Velasco Shaw is a media artist, educator, curator, and cultural organizer currently living in Manila. Her films have screened in American, European, and Asian film festivals, museums, galleries, and schools. Some of these works are in the archive collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, Cinematheque Suisse Schweizer Filmarchiv, Casa Asia, and the Museum of Modern Art. She is an Associate Professor in the School of Arts and Sciences/ Communication Arts Department, and the Director of the Institute for Heritage, Culture and the Arts at Philippine Women’s University. She has curated and produced several visual art and film exhibitions, and cross-cultural exchange projects such as “The Inverted Telescope”, “Markets of Resistance”, “Women as (Mythical) Hero”, “Vestiges of War”, and co-curated “Empire and Memory: Repercussions and Evocations of the 1899 Philippine-American War”, to name a few. Shaw co-edited the anthology Vestiges of War: The Philippine-American War and the Aftermath of An Imperial Dream: 1899-1999 with Luis H. Francia (New York University Press, 2002) and self-published Silent Stories (1985). She was a recipient of a 100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the U.S. “Innovators & Thought Leaders” award by Filipina Women’s Network in 2011. The Markets of Resistance anthology is forthcoming (Ateneo de Manila University Press, 2020).
