MANILA – Visual artist Marina Cruz expresses her fascination for fabric in her exhibit, “Fabric Skin,” set to open at the Art Informal gallery in Greenhills on July 24.

Ten oil on canvas paintings will be shown at the exhibit, each of them depicting dresses found in Cruz’s grandmother’s closet that date back to the 1950s and 1960s and have been worn by the artist’s grandmother, mother, and aunt.

According to an article by Lisa Ito on the Art Informal website, Cruz began using dresses as a subject matter in 2010, after she found the baptismal dresses of her mother and aunts.

Ito noted in the article that while dresses are either personal or functional, ” Cruz does not frame the object in solely personal terms and instead reveals a fascination with their formal qualities, such as texture, shape, line, composition and color. “

“Fabric Skin” will be held at Art Informal’s Main Gallery.

At the same time, two other exhibits will be launching on the same date: Salvador Joel Alonday’s “Topiary” in the Big Room, and Lyra Garcellano’s “Double Consciousness” in the Inner Room.

The exhibits will run until August 11.
