MANILA – The adobo Design Awards Asia 2018 presented by adobo magazine and co-presented by Jollibee and Globe took center stage at BGC Arts Center last March 20-21. A two-day judging process was held and Grey Advertising Thailand’s Chief Creative Officer, Jureeporn Thaimdumrong, acted as the Head of Jury.
The adobo Design Awards 2018 has partnered with D&AD, the most prestigious awards-giving body in design, in 2016 and 2017 establishing it as one of the key awards shows not only in the Philippines but in the whole Asia.
For this year, a total of 19 professional categories that were patterned from D&AD include: Press & Poster, Packaging Design, Outdoor, Product Design, Corporate/Branding Identity, Book Design, Magazine & Newspaper Design, Film Advertising, Film/Video Craft, Graphic Design, Production Design, Illustration, Wearable Design, Typography, Digital/Interactive Design, Photography, Mobile, Photography, and Environmental/Spatial Design.

With this year’s theme, “Design Solutions in a Connected World”, an esteemed panel of jury together with Thaidumrong was carefully selected to critique every entry. The panel of jury include: Pann Lim of Kinetic Singapore, Eric Cruz of AKQA Shanghai, Dan Matutina of Plus 63 Design Philippines, Rhea Matute of Design Center of the Philippines, Joe Dy of McCann WorldGroup Philippines, Mervin Malonzo author of Tabi Po, Arnold Serrano of One Zero Design Co., Dave Ferrer of J. Walter Thompson, Gerry Torres of De La Salle College of St. Benilde, Tepai Pascual of Meganon Comics, and Jowee Alviar of Team Manila.
“I’m really honestly pleased in terms of the actual level or level of craft in the work,” Eric Cruz, Executive Creative Director of AKQA Shanghai said when asked about the entries submitted for this year’s design awards.
Arts Serrano, Founder of One Zero Design Co. also shared what he thinks about this year’s design awards. “I think right now that the design industries are kind of merging together. Architecture isn’t just architecture anymore. Branding and other creative industries aren’t just their own independent islands. It’s a great time to be in the creative industry kasi you see more of these collaborations happening.”
For this year, 70 finalists emerged out of 262 entries. The finalists are:

“I believe that the Philippines has a lot of talented people and artist and creative,” Thaidumrong shared when asked about her insights during the deliberation of the entries. “I would love to see more of the outstanding and brave [entries] and courage [to] not follow anyone.”
The Grand Awards Night will be held on April 25, 2018 at BGC Arts Center.
