MANILA – Inspired by the quote of the legendary inventor of (let there be light!) the electric light bulb, 99U encourages entrepreneurs, freelancers and artists to act, experiment and make ideas happen. That’s why for the first time, in partnership with muni, they held the very first 99U Local Manila at the Ayala Museum.

Seasoned director Pepe Diokno, shoe designer Tal De Guzman, and social innovator and urban planner Julia Nebrija stood before a rambunctious crowd as they shared how they make ideas happen.

International award-winning director Pepe Diokno talked about the importance of disagreements in filmmaking. “Pick people who can say no to you. I actually appreciate it more when they tell me why my idea doesn’t work,” he says.

Tal De Guzman, the owner of Risque Designs, discussed empowerment among her employees. Saying that workers are the best assets an employer has. Proper compensation and recognition are essential for them not to feel taken advantaged of.

Julia Nebrija, on the other hand, poses a question amongst her audience. “Why do people say they love the Philippines, but no one says they love Manila?” This idea sparked the beginning of Viva Manila, an organization that champions the revitalization of urban spaces through Philippine arts and culture in which cultural artist, Carlos Celdran is also a board member.

99U is a New York-based organization, which aims to empower creatives, build supportive networks, and share tips and best practices. They are the education arm of Behance, a renowned online platform to showcase and discover creative work. 99U is Behance’s effort to provide a session meant for making ideas happen.

Manila is one of the 28 handpicked cities from globally to experience this casual, one-night-only local 99U-style event.  Each city was chosen through an extensive Ambassador application process in early 2015.
