MANILA – Top guns in the advertising and design industry gathered at The Gallery in Greenbelt 5 on March 24, the first day of judging for this year’s adobo Design Awards.

Now on its fifth year, the adobo Design Awards has grown, with 366 entries in 2014 compared to 240 entries in 2013. There were also nine international entries this year, from England, Malaysia, and Barcelona.

Headed by New York-based design guru Lucille Tenazas, this year’s jury is composed of Jowee Alviar, Amina Aranaz, Kenneth Cobonpue, John Ed De Vera, AJ Dimarucot, Dave Ferrer, Tobias Guggenheimer, Dale Lopez, Meneer Marcelo, Dan Matutina, Leeroy New, Armand Serrano, Jay Tablante, Budjette Tan, Brian Tenorio, Jose Maria Yupangco, and Ompong Remigio. “Our jury this year is a force to be reckoned with, ensuring that it is truly the best that will emerge as winners,” said Angel Guerrero, president and editor-in-chief of adobo.

Jury member Jowee Alviar of Team Manila Graphic Design Studio said that when it comes to trends, he saw two things: “One is more of typography in terms of branding, and there are some works that are minimalist designs, which I find really refreshing. The other is more of the illustration group.”

Alviar said that while there was a good mix of entries this year, they would still want to see more choices in the future. “We’ve been judging the aDA for a couple of years already – we see the progression. The entries keep growing. We see more entries from abroad also… I think that’s good, making the competition more international,” he said.
