Artistic collaborations were never this easy! Trust Philippine creativity to circumvent artistic tantrums. In Manila Design Week’s second offering, Creative Collaboration, eight teams of 5-odd artists each worked on the editorial: Beautiful Functional—and what a visual feast they have generated. Armed with photographer, stylist, graphic designer and makeup artist, with the odd inclusion of furniture designer, copywriter and prosthetics artist in some teams. With no other adjective more apt than diverse, the Nokia-sponsored theme pulled the stops on total creative freedom and the Pinoy artists responded with fervor producing work in 3D, electronica, multi- and mixed media and avant-garde, plus a few fashion-and-graphic arts-heavy pieces.

At one point in the exhibit, a few visually-impaired and totally blind guests got their first experience in viewing art. Literally hands-on, the special guests could barely contain their surprise as they ran their fingers gingerly, then eagerly, across the panels and discovering Braille text embedded on them. The feeling was mutual, as revealed by graphic designer AJ Dimarucot, prosthetics artist Cecille Baun and stylist Millet Arzaga, the last being the brains behind the Braille. “To be able to bring art to those who cannot see through Braille and (special) graphic designs is the future of publishing and art.”
For photographers Jake Verzosa (3D), Mark Nicdao (electronica) and Kai Huang (mixed media), Manila Design Week was simply too irresistible and promising, creative collaboration was a breeze. Verzosa said, “The idea just came to us through inuman (drinking)” All three photogs knew of their teammates, but never worked with them prior to MDW. Rocket Science Creative Director Manny De Rosario, simply said, “Manila Design Week is a good vision.”
