MANILA — When the Filipino motorists were driving along the country’s national expressways during one ordinary Tuesday in March, some of the tollbooths looked a bit out of place.
And the teller, instead of picking up the motorists’ payment, came out with a bag, a McDonald’s take out bag.
Based on the faces of the motorists, what was happening was just very, very confusing.
Things just got a little weirder when celebrities started peeking out of the tollbooths, too.
Turns out, McDonald’s Philippines, with the help of Leo Burnett Manila, just wanted to give the early Filipino road warriors a treat, similar to what they have done with National Breakfast Day last March.
The McTollbooth is part of McDonald’s global initiative imlovinit24, which aims to bring the world together virtually through 24 gifts of joy in 24 hours in 24 different cities, of which the Philippines is a part.
From 6:30-8:00 AM, lucky motorists who passed the McTollbooth, located at the Bocaue Exit at the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Nichols Plaza at the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), were given free McMuffin sandwiches and treated to free toll fees. Thousands of McMuffin sandwiches were given away.
“With McTollbooth, McDonald’s Philippines is able to spread happiness to motorists who experience the daily grind going to work or school every morning. We are delighted to be part of the brand’s global initiative of engaging our customers and bringing the world together with 24 random acts of surprise,” said McDonald’s Philippines Senior Vice President for Marketing, Margot Torres.
Clearly, no one saw that coming, but everyone surely loved it.
