MANILA, PHILIPPINES – 5+ million runners. 56+ million kilometres. One goal: Help End Plastic Waste.

The power of sport truly knows no bounds. This was exhibited by the recently-concluded Run For The Oceans, an initiative of adidas and Parley with the aim of helping End Plastic Waste. Taking place for the fourth year in a row from May 28 to June 8, millions of runners around the world took up the challenge to make a difference.

Throughout the initiative, the Philippines proved to be no exception. Filipino runners also took part in the goal of helping to address marine plastic pollution, contributing over 6,700 participating runners and a grand total of more than 33,700 kilometers run.

Known for its active and passionate running community, Manila participants were not alone in participating in Run For The Oceans. Groups such as the DAVAO RUNNERS and the Siargao-based SEA Movement banded together for the initiative, channeling the influence and power of sport to make a difference for the Earth.

“We were delighted to see just how many of our kababayans took on the challenge to Run For The Oceans. Given how our country is actually known to be one of the biggest contributors of ocean plastic pollution in the world,  we desired to continue doing this program for athletes and runners to enable them to help End Plastic Waste even as they pursue their passion for running.  The most recent Run For The Oceans just goes to show that whether you run alone or with your community does not matter – just by running and harnessing the power of sport, anyone is capable of making a difference,” said adidas Philippines Brand Activation Manager Jen Dacasin.

Run For The Oceans is a result of the partnership between adidas and Parley, which invites runners around the world to unite to help End Plastic Waste. Available on the adidas Running app, adidas x Parley will clean up the equivalent weight of 10 plastic bottles from beaches, remote islands, and coastlines for every tracked kilometer, with up to 500,000 lbs of plastic waste that can be cleaned up.

Thank you to every single one of you for joining the #RunForTheOceans movement. As we become more empowered to do our part for the planet, let us finish what we started in the journey to End Plastic Waste.  Find out how you can stay involved at adidas.com/sustainability.
