MANILA – Despite the gloomy weather, it was a full house at the Roof Deck Event Space of Century Mall Makati last July 4 & 5.
Type nerds of all ages gathered to witness the first ever type-conference in the Philippines, Type Lab MNL.
The event was graced by some of the renowned typographers and calligraphers in the Philippines, Abbey Sy, Fozzy Dayrit, Kaye Aranzanso and John Ed de Vera, to name a few, showcasing some of their works and sharing tips and tricks on how others, too, can try the art of typography.
Apart from the seminars, also present in the event were pop up stores that cater to every type nerd’s calligraphy and typography needs–with products ranging from calligraphy pens of various colors and sizes, notebooks, pads, washi tapes, pens, markers, brushes, and other watercolor lettering paraphernalia.
With all the tools available in the venue, the attendees could just try the lessons being imparted by the speakers right then and there or as soon as they got home.
The showcase of works of different calligraphers on display did not disappoint the type nerds or type nerd “wannabes” who were looking for inspiration on how to be creative about their next lettering and calligraphy project, or how to jumpstart one.
The first Type Lab MNL, despite some of the logistical glitches, the venue got a bit too crowded (a good problem, though!) and the speakers’ schedules had to be adjusted because the area was unexpectedly too bright for the presentations to be seen clearly and appreciated by the audience, is one for the books. We are already looking forward to the next one!
