Arts & Culture: Perlas ng Silangan, A Regional Collaborative Dance Drama at the Cultural Center of the Philippines

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) through its Cultural Exchange Department (CED) presents a collaborative dance drama featuring four leading regional performing groups in “PERLAS NG SILANGAN” (Pearl of the Orient Sun) on October 10 at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater).

From 2014-2018, the CCP CED under its program entitled “Ugnayan sa Sining” successfully mounted and toured four collaborative productions which highlighted the cultural expressions and traditions of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.   For 2019, the productions were presented at the CCP little theater starting February to October.  The Mindanao collaborative production opened the series last February followed by the Visayas last July 25 and Luzon last September 25.  Perlas ng Silangan is the last regional collaborative production that is presented for 2019.

Perlas performing groups include the Sinukwan Kapampangan Performing Arts of Angeles City, Pampanga; Maskara Theater Ensemble of the University of St. La Salle Bacolod City; the Philippine Barangay Folk Dance Troupe Rondalla from NCR; and the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG) of MSU-IIT Iligan City.

With concept, music and direction by Dr. Steven Patrick C. Fernandez and choreography by Melvin Pascubillo, this performance captures the centuries of history of the Filipino people encapsulating the spirits of the significant eras that shaped the Filipino and his nation.  The production images the glitter of a storied history of the “Pearl of the Orient.”  The pearl — revered and desired, and through time aged in an oyster’s shell — glows in iridescent splendour when struck by the sun.  The audience will experience the Philippine story in music, dance and images in the collaborative production.

The 2019 Ugnayan sa Sining performances @the CCP are offerings of the center to commemorate its 50th Anniversary and the 40th Year of its Outreach Program and are intended for students and local communities who have limited or no access/means to experience live cultural engagements at the CCP.   After the little theater run, the production will have an outreach move-over performance on October 12, 2:00 pm at the Nueva Vizcaya Convention Center in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya.  This is presented in partnership with the Provincial Government of Nueva Vizcaya and St. Mary’s University in Bayombong.
