THE PHILIPPINES, OCTOBER 27, 2011: For the upcoming fifth edition of Philippine Art Trek, the month-long series of performance art, lectures, and exhibitions of Philippine art in Singapore, Optima Digital boss Pete Jimenez puts on a different hat.
Jimenez, known in the local art scene for his scrap metal sculptures, is one of the three artists in the exhibit entitled “Eclectic (The Uncomfortable Process of Change)” at Momentous Arts, alongside painter Rene Robles, and fellow sculptor Jinggoy Buensuceso. The three showcase their concept of making ‘open’ type sculptures as opposed to the classic ‘closed’ type three-dimensional sculptures. Collectively they will explore the notion of creation and materiality and through their approach, the viewer looks at sculptures from a different light and the possibilities of what sculptures could be.
This year, more experimental and multidisciplinary work are featured at Philippine Art Trek V, which takes place this November. The artist lineup is top-billed by Filipino avant-garde icon David Cortez Medalla, who will perform a work entitled “Bato-bato sa Langit, ang Tamaan Huwag Magalit” on November 3 at the anchor event of Art Trek V, entitled Sites of Practice—Filipino Performance Art Abroad, organized by the Philippine Embassy in partnership with the National University of Singapore (NUS) Museum.
An Artists’ Dialogue on November 4 will bring one-time Singapore resident Jose Tence Ruiz together with his Singaporean counterparts Amanda Heng and Lee Wen in a conversation about performance art.
Other exhibits include Geraldine Javier at Valentine Willie Fine Art; Prudencio Miel and Jose Tence Ruiz at Artesan Gallery + Studio; Argie Bandoy, Patricia Eustaquio, Jonathan Olazo, Jayson Oliveria, Maria Taniguchi, MM Yu, At Maculangan, Pardo de Leon, Jed Escueta, Al Cruz and Khavn de la Cruz at TAKSU Singapore; Dominic Rubio and Lydia Velasco at GJ Asian Art; the Quinta collective at Galerie Sogan and Art; and Anthony Palomo at Sunjin Galleries.
Art Trek has showcased the works of more than 150 Filipino artists in Singapore since 2007, helping to deepen the cultural interaction and friendship between the two countries. It has been able to do this through the support of the Embassy’s partners, including, this year, the Lee Foundation, Credit Suisse, Keppel Corporation, Bank of Singapore, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, and Airphil Express.
Further information about Art Trek V may be found on the Embassy’s website, www.philippine-embassy.org.sg.
