TOKYO, JAPAN – As cherry blossoms bloom next week, millions will gather for hanami, unaware of a growing crisis — Japan’s aging sakura(Cherry Blossom). Many Somei Yoshino trees, planted during post-war reconstruction, are now surpassing their 70-year lifespan, increasing the risk of collapse. However, local governments often lack the resources and data needed for proper maintenance.

To address this pressing issue, Kirin Brewery introduced the “SAKURA AI CAMERA,” a groundbreaking initiative that allows citizens to contribute to preservation efforts by photographing trees. This innovative technology enables AI to assess the health of the cherry trees, and the collected data supports local authorities in proactive tree care.

The public can witness the AI camera in action during hanami, where experts — including tree doctors — will be available for interviews on the aging sakura crisis and the role of technology in conservation. This initiative not only aims to protect Japan’s cherished cherry trees but also to enhance the hanami experience for all.
