MANILA – The Philippines is a country of world class talents. This holds true for those who are on top of their game when it comes to film animation and storytelling.

However, you’ve probably noticed how a lot of Filipino animators, illustrators, or writers are either praised or commissioned by people abroad–like Ronnie del Carmen who co-directed Pixar’s Inside Out, Bobby Pontillas for Wreck It Ralph, or Gini Cruz Santos for Incredibles.

We want to change that.

Memory Crafters, Freelancer.com, and Komikasi, with the support of Payoneer and Yuneoh, will be holding the first-ever Animation Jam — a pitching competition and learning event that aims to gather, involve, and encourage people, especially those in the creative industry & students, to come together and produce original Filipino animation shorts. This event wants to spark friendly competition to discover the best animation shorts in the country, all of whose works wil be published in a Youtube channel, freely seen by people from all over the globe, and highly marketed by the organizers. The activities will be filled with lessons imparted by various experts in the industry.

Animation Jam will also be a medium for activating the #LovePinoyAnimation campaign. Storytellers, creative directors, freelance graphic illustrators, artists, students, marketing associates, or anyone with the passion, or curiosity, for this are welcome to join!

The theme is kilig ~ which so happens to be one of the newest words included in the Oxford Dictionary. “When we were thinking of the topic for this year’s animation jam, we thought of something “pinoy”, and being passionate & giddy about something ~ and the word kilig came into our minds. Kilig encapsulates the feeling of intense excitement, and love for something that people are passionate for,” says Memory Crafters CEO, Ginger Arboleda.

It will be a 3-day intensive workshop as scheduled:

Friday evening – May 27 from 6:00 to 10:00 PM

We will have a short introduction on what will happen during the three days that we will be together. We will have special opening remarks from Jim Fernandez. Jim M. Fernandez is a Filipino comic book artist who popularized the fictional character, Zuma. He is best known for his works on Aztec and Aliwan Komiks. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of Philippine Comics.

We will then have the 1 minute pitches from those with stories that they would like to pitch. All of the attendees will then vote for their top 3 picks. The top pitchers will then choose members of their team.

The team will need to be comprised of at least:
2 Storytellers aside from the pitcher

4 Illustrators /animators
2 Marketing / business people
They will group into teams and discuss about their story.

Saturday – May 28 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

In the morning, everyone will join a plenary session. The plenary session will be a 2.5 hour session that will discuss different topics that will help them come up and market their animation shorts. Topics will include a keynote speech from Tito Romero. Tito Romero is an animator and creative director best known for his work with Dayo: Sa Mundo ng Elementalia. We will also have a short discussion on Storytelling for Animation and the Business of Animation.
