No holds barred fight: the Open Category of the adobo Design Awards Asia 2017

Globe Telecom and Nestle’s Bear Brand sponsor awards for Mobile App Design for Social Good and Photography, respectively

It’s the equivalent of a Mixed Martial Arts fight for designers where competitors can use any technique in any form of design—from product design to typography, from UXD to wearables—and battle it out to claim the prize for being a noteworthy designer who can inspire humanity and change lives for the better.

The aDAA, on its eighth year, continuous to assert its stature as one of the region’s most important creative awards, especially with the continued participation of D&AD, a UK-based educational organization known for their staging of the world’s toughest design competition and most coveted design accolade.

Open battlefield

The Open Category of the aDAA challenges both professionals/freelancers and students.

Contestants must present fresh work that responds to the brief—this year’s Open Category theme. aDAA 2017’s theme is “Inspire Humanity Through Design.” Design is creativity that should serve a function and purpose, constructed to serve humanity, and have aesthetic as a core value.

Entries may be presented in any format: illustration, typography, photography, 3D product, wearable, video, mobile application, etc.

Within the Open Category are also sponsored awards: Globe Telecom’s Mobile App Design For Social Good award recognizes entries in the mobile application format that present creative solutions to social issues or problems. Netsle’s Bear Brand sponsors the Photography award which recognizes the best and most inspirational photo that exemplifies “Tibay ng Pinoy” and portrays the strength of will of Filipino families.

Winners for these categories will receive cash prizes and/or special awards courtesy of the sponsors.

World War

Besides the Open Category, there are 20 professional categories patterned loosely after the D&AD that include: Press and Poster, Corporate/Brand Identity, Typography, Illustration, Book Design, Magazine and Newspaper Design, Film Advertising, Videos, Short Film, Film/Video Craft, Graphic Design, Packaging Design, Outdoor, Environmental/Spatial, Product Design, Wearable Design, Production Design, Photography, Digital/Interactive, and Mobile.

adobo Design Week kicks off on 27 March with the judging of the adobo Design Awards entries as well as a special exhibit showcasing the D&AD top winners (Black and Yellow Pencils) in 2016. Capping off the week will be the adobo Design Series on 29 March, featuring D&AD president Bruce Duckworth delivering the keynote speech, and select jury members who will give short but inspiring design talks. In addition, D&AD resident trainor Alex Lampe flies in to lead a special workshop on Art Direction for Digital on 30 March.  Definitely not one to be missed!

Awarding ceremonies will be held on April 5.

Other esteemed members of the jury include Jowee Alviar of Team Manila, Dave Ferrer of J. Walter Thompson, calligrapher Patrick Cabral, Dan Matutina of Plus63 Design, Robert Alejandro of RAD Design, Quark Henares of Globe Studios, Ivan Despi of Acid House, internationally acclaimed art photographer Wawi Navarroza, Tokyo-based creative director Yoshihiro Yagi of Dentsu Inc, and DC comic book artist Harvey Tolibao.
