SINGAPORE – Mother’s Day is here, and that means children everywhere have been carefully selecting that perfect something to show Mom just how much she means to them. But, according to a regional survey commissioned by HappyFresh, 63% of Moms prefer a simple ‘Thank you’ from their children to gifts of flowers and jewelry.
As the company that knows and understands Moms, HappyFresh conducted a study to better understand what Asian working mothers go through in their lives, her roles in the family and what they really want this Mother’s Day. The study covered 800 respondents through online and face-to-face interviews across five countries – Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.
The research revealed other interesting attitudes and behavioral patterns among working mothers in Asia including –
Why women work: In many families today, mothers continue to work because they have careers that they have spent years developing but, most importantly, nearly half of the respondents (46%) work because their family needs the additional income.
Challenges as a working mother: 64% of respondents said that lack of time with their children is the most challenging part of being a working mother. This could stem from concern about the loss of time with a child, especially if he or she is very young. They worry that they will miss some of their child’s important milestones, such as baby’s first step or word.
Household chores: Working moms (64%) still take on the bulk of household chores and, on average, they spent more than an hour on chores daily.
Family time: When asked about time spend with family and loved ones, 8 out of 10 of the respondents wished they could have more time with their family and loved ones, and less on household chores.
“As moms, it brings us joy to spend most of our time caring for our children and bringing them up, without expecting any reward. Our rewards come in the form of little things when our kids take a moment to make our day lighter by washing the dishes, doing the laundry or just spending time together watching television at home,” Miranda Apriyanti, the Office Manager of HappyFresh Jakarta, Indonesia who is also a mother of two, said. “I am happy to work in a company that helps working moms like me make the best out of our time, spending it with our children instead of supermarket queue.” she continued.
The CEO and Co-founder of HappyFresh, Markus Bihler, said “HappyFresh’s purpose is to help our customers, who we like to call HappyFreshers, to make smart choices with online grocery shopping and spend more time with their loved ones. With our passion and history of doing this, we have come to know and understand our primary customers, mothers. With this insight, we would like to encourage people to celebrate and thank moms simply, yet meaningfully. And to all Dads out there: do the dishes!”
