MANILA, PHILIPPINES — To raise awareness on the plight of shark and ray species in the country, Save Sharks Network Philippines is holding a series of activities to mark Shark Conservation Week from February 27 to March 04.

“As tourism and other economic activities go back to pre-pandemic levels, our oceans and the species that call it home to continue to face many threats,” said Save Philippine Seas Executive Creative Director and Chief Memaid Anna Oposa. “We need national legislation that lays out how we can best protect and sustainable manage threats to our sharks and rays.”

Previous Shark Conservation Weeks were held in Cebu City in 2014; Dumaguete City in 2016; and Panglao and Tagbilaran City, Bohol in 2018. One of the objectives of Shark Conservation Week is to build a constituency among various stakeholders, including line government agencies, legislators, private sector, youth and academic institutions, fish, traders, and other sectors such as tourism.

A Shark Summit will be held on March 02 and 03 to document the progress of shark conservation in the Philippines and create a framework which will be the basis of any policy needs and conservation actions identified.

On Saturday, March 04, a “Baby Shark Storytelling Session” will also be held in Museo Pambata and a “K-Pop for the Sharks” event will follow in Market! Market! in Taguig City.
