ABS-CBN launches digital TV service

MANILA – In a first for Philippine television, digital transmission is now available through the launch of ABS-CBN’s TVplus.

ABS-CBN TVplus, a digital box more popularly known as the ‘mahiwagang black box,’ brings a clearer picture and sound than the current analog system.

“Magbabago ang tingin niyo sa TV ninyo, that’s the simplest way of saying it. There are two levels. Literally, because from the snowy and cloudy analog reception, your TVs will have clearer picture and sound on digital TV. Figuratively, because our viewers will have access to new content, new information, new entertainment through our free, exclusive channels. We’re really excited that this innovation is coming from ABS-CBN because we are directly servicing our viewers,” ABS-CBN head of access group Carlo Katigbak said.

The ceremonial switch-on that will mark the start of the digital television age in the country will happen on February 11 at the ABS-CBN Center Road to be attended by ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio Lopez III and ABS-CBN president and CEO Charo Santos-Concio.

The purchase of TVplus includes an additional four free-to-air channels, on top of ABS-CBN and ABS-CBN Sports+Action. These include all-day movie channel CineMo, children’s entertainment channel Yey, Knowledge Channel, and DZMM TeleRadyo. The TVplus black box has been developed to work with all kinds of TV sets, even older ones, to get crystal clear signal.

ABS-CBN TVplus will be available where digital signal transmission is currently available, such as Metro Manila, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Benguet, and Metro Cebu. ABS-CBN has been preparing for the switchover since 2007, having conducted test broadcast activities for the past seven years to ensure a smooth transition to DTT.

The network has conducted DTT trials in key areas all over the Philippines, with consumer test results turning out to be highly positive.
