PHILIPPINES, JANUARY 2011 – While more popularly known as a theater actor, Joel Trinidad was, once upon a time, an account manager and copywriter for Lintas Manila (now Lowe). Trinidad pays homage to his ad days in his new play, the romantic musical comedy, Breakups & Breakdowns. Trinidad wrote the book and lyrics; music is by Rony Fortich.
The character Nina, a graphic designer for an ad agency, is based on Trinidad’s own experiences in advertising. In one scene, Nina even gives a pitch for a product. "Eleven years since I left advertising, the word ‘pitch’ still gives me nightmares,” says Joel. “It means I’m not going to sleep for at least three days."
His copy days play a significant role in putting together the play: "Advertising gave me the discipline of writing within certain parameters. You’re constantly writing, refining, and revising, and bringing your standards higher. It enhanced my own thing for perfection."
Breakups & Breakdowns runs at Teatrino, Greenhills from February 18 to March 12, 2011. For ticket reservations, e-mail upstarttickets@gmail.com or visit http://upstartproductionsinc.com.
