THE PHILIPPINES – AUGUST 8, 2011 – The Office of Culture and Design (The OCD), in collaboration with Carlos Celdran, Instituto Cervantes Manila, interior designer Joby Belmonte (of Eclectic Living at LRI Design Plaza and TV5’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition Philippines), and the Independent Filmmakers Multi-purpose Cooperative, presents a novel project that prods indie film to go beyond the arthouse.

Independent film is a curious creature: it thrives and get recognition outside of its country but struggles to get an audience on the home turf. The Philippine indie scene is no exception. But arguably, the solution is not expect mainstream attention but to enact change from the ground up, from the filmmakers and producers themselves. These venues, organizations and initiatives must cooperate to create awareness and demand for their product. Essentially, they are tasked with the fascinating task of building their own market in order to evolve into a self-sufficient industry.

Eternal Sunrise is a documentary by Spanish filmmaker Guzman de Yarza Blache about going around the world without ever leaving the airport. He traveled to 16 airports in 25 days.

In a film installation and exhibit opening on August 12 and running until October 30 at The OCD, the films will be shown on one or two monitors with headphones. Aside from the film, Yarza took 385 photos on the trip, all of which will be printed and put up around exhibit space as a photo installation, designed by The OCD and executed in collaboration with the resident signpainter, Jambo.

Celebrity artist and activist patron Carlos Celdran will screen the movie for a select group of 50 VIP attendees at The Living Room in Malate, Manila. A special showing of Eternal Sunrise will be organized in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes.

In cooperation with the Indie Filmmakers’ Cooperative, a round table discussion on what is being done to promote local films within the country will also be organized.

The Office of Culture and Design is located at The Collective, 7274 Malugay Street, Makati City.
