PHILIPPINES, SEPTEMBER 22, 2010 – Reading is a priceless skill that paves the way for growth, career advancement and the expansion of knowledge. Ateneo de Manila Masteral students Angelica Joy Tordesillas, Iya Regalario, Mary Rose Andrada, and Eduardus Besembum, believers in the power of reading, came up with the IREAD project for their Communication and Social Change course under the MA Communication program.
“The name of the project reflects one of the primary goals of the project which is to make reading less intimidating for the less fortunate members of society,” explains Tordesillas.
“By October 9, we aim to open a public library for the St. Claire Community in Marilao, Bulacan. We are now in the process of collecting book donations [for kids ages 7-13], school supplies, and funds. We are confident that opening a library in the community will definitely make a positive effect on how the kids look at the world,” Andrada says.
The group will convert a 90-square-meter space in the community into a library conducive to learning. To complement this, a free workshop will also be given to re-introduce reading to the kids as an approachable and enjoyable activity.
“We need all the support we can get. It’s a good project and we hope that many other people see the beauty of it too, and the contribution it can give to nation building as well,” adds Besumbum.
Book donations are accepted at any Books for Less branch from September 22 to October 6. Kindly label your donation with “Books for the St. Claire Community”.
