For the nominations, MTV continued to eliminate gender-specific awards categories, as they did at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards. MTV also announced the “Moonman” statue would be renamed a “Moon Person”. The Best Female and Best Male Video awards were replaced with one category, Artist of the Year.

Top Dawg Entertainment recording artist Kendrick Lamar, will take the stage for the first time as a solo headline performer. He leads the list of nominees with eight categories and joins an extensive line-up of A-list performers for the show, including Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran, and The Weeknd, among others, promising more music and unpredictable moments than ever before.

MTV also announced that the 2017 VMAs will bestow P!nk with its highest honor, the “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award,” for her trailblazing impact on music, pop culture, fashion and philanthropy. P!nk’s legacy spawns a 17-year long career as a powerhouse vocalist and performer. With this honor, P!nk joins the prestigious list of past Vanguard recipients including Michael Jackson, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, Guns N’ Roses, Beastie Boys, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, BEYONCÉ, Kanye West, and Rihanna.
