Last May 12, Power Mac Center and Pixelworx awarded the winners of Cinemansanas, a filmmaking competition where short films shot with iOS devices took the spotlight.
The awarding ceremony at the Power Mac Center in Circuit Makati featured jurors Mario Cornejo and Monster Jimenez, indie auteurs who were impressed with the range and types of entries—experimental, heartfelt or innovative. When asked about the factors jurors were looking for during the deliberation period, Cornejo said that he’s looking at the heart of the artist–if he has something to say that can be felt. Jimenez added that she’s looking for authentically-made films and whenever she sees that, she always tells Cornejo, “This movie makes me feel alive.”
Seasoned director Yam Laranas, also a juror on the contest, imparted that while technology is a very important tool in creating a film—the person wielding it should know how to use it to create a story, since it can make or break your film. Regarding the entry deliberations, Laranas said that he was looking for the execution and application of the technical aspect.
Multi-awarded author and screenwriter Ricky Lee imparted that in writing, “Dapat bukas yung sarili mo para mabuksan mo yung mundo… para yung sinusulat mong character nakabukas din sa audience.” He added that you need to be willing to open yourself so the things that you will write will be coming from you. He also stated that the conscious mind is a liar and what you’ll get from it are the beautiful things that you’ve seen on your environment and you’ll end up writing based on those things. On the other hand, the subconscious mind is more reliable according to Lee—and writing with the subconscious will reveal your inner self, without copying from anyone.
