CANNES, FRANCE — Day one of this year’s Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has concluded, and with the week’s kickoff came the announcement of the first batch of winners. Getting the ball rolling for a week of celebrating elite works in creative communications, the Cannes Lions has announced the entries have earned a Lion in the categories of Pharma, Health & Wellness, Radio & Audio, Print & Publishing, and Outdoor.
While there are no Asia winners from the Pharma category, a handful of agencies from countries in the region — namely UAE, China, and Thailand — snagged metals in the other five categories.
The big win for the first day among the winning entrants falls in the hands of Impact BBDO. Thanks to its work “Newspapers Inside the Newspaper Edition” for Lebanese publication AnNahar Newspaper, the UAE-based agency now has a Print & Publishing Grand Prix to mark its Cannes Lions 2023 week with a great start.
The AnNahar Newspaper has been publishing for 90 years, but in that long legacy, it was the first time that they published a daily edition where each spread belonged to a different publication. More specifically, to emphasize how free press has been and continues to be under attack, it featured the works of journalists from local publications that ceased to exist in the past two decades such as Al Anouar, The Daily Star, Al Hayat, As Safir, Al Mostaqbal, and Al Bayraq.
Also off to a good start is another agency from UAE, FP7 McCann. The Dubai-based agency ended the festival’s first day with a Silver and Bronze Outdoor Lion for Live Advertising and Events and Ambient Outdoor respectively its “The Heinzjack” campaign for Heinz.
